Description
By the end of World War II, piston-powered fighters were at their absolute zenith. As good as those airplanes were, America's aviation industry found itself starting over in the Jet Age with new airplanes powered by anemic and somewhat cantankerous turbine engines. More importantly, just as these new aircraft were maturing, they were thrust into war in the skies over Korea. Grumman's first jets were potent aircraft in their own right, but also proved to be the building blocks from which two more famous Grumman 'cats' were born the legendary A-6 Intruder and supersonic F-14 Tomcat.
Grumman F9F Panther/Cougar tells the story of the pivotal F9F Panther from its initial concept through early design and manufacturing, flight test, aircraft carrier trials, and combat operations in the Korean War. Completing this story is coverage of the more advanced swept-wing transonic Cougar that goes on to become an effective trainer and photo-recon aircraft as well. Detailed appendices provide the reader with complete data on F9F production numbers, carrier deployments, and squadron histories.

Summary: "This is a great book on the Grumman F-9F"
This book provides a detailed discussion on the early navy jet fighter and also on the early development of the Panther from its inception as the Design G-79. It touches on essentially all aspects of the Grumman Panther and Cougar and even have a chapter on the use of the Panther/Cougar by the Blue Angels.
The minor imperfection is the missing of any detailed discussion of the conversion of the Panther/Cougar after WWII to drone or drone director.
For the price of $20 from Amazon, this is a book well worth keeping.

Summary: "Definitive??"
Although a very nice book, I was actually looking forward to a book comparable to Specialty Press's titles like for example the B-36 or the navy jet fighter, which feature much more in-depth info and more 'untold stories'. I found this more a book that puts a lot of already known stuff together in one place with some new things and personal stories from (a) pilot (s).
So, for me, I was personally a bit disappointed regarding the contents but it is still a nice addition to the collection.

Summary: "History Lesson"
This book gives great insight as how even in the 40's-50's reporters, with no technical training and knowledge created enough smoke and mirrors to cause ignorant politicians to interfere with securing an effective aircraft needed by the Navy.It is an excellent disertation on the history and development of a great naval fighter and the courage ofthe the men who flew them.

Summary: "Definitive Book about the Panther/Cougar"
Brad Elward's 'Grumman F95 Panther/Cougar' is the definitive work on this classic aircraft. As a military aviation historian, I found his treatment of the early development of the jet fighter program fascinating, and Elward's coverage of the evolution of this aircraft, from drawing board through the Panther, and later the swept-wing Cougar, is exhaustive and a fun read. Crammed with hard-to-find photos and specs, this book is the definitive book on this classic aircraft---one of the first fighters of the new jet age. Not only a technical history, though, this book covers the evolution of the aircraft, its performance in combat, and how the Grumman Panther/Cougar fits into the overall evolution of American aircraft from piston-driven to jet. I loved this book, and recommend it without reservation.

Summary: "Great Book for Hard Core Aviation Fans"
Another great title from Specialty Press. Everything you want to know about the F9F, with loads of great pictures. From development to combat and everything in between. I'm shorting it a star because it would have been great to see more color pictures. Otherwise it's superb.
